Why Adult Readiness Matters

  • Young people may be the first to experience risk, but adults are often responsible for noticing warning signs, responding to disclosures, and connecting them to support.
  • Without shared knowledge and clear response practices, concerns can be missed or handled inconsistently.
  • Professional development helps adults understand what to look for, what to do when concerns arise, and how to respond without creating additional harm.

What the Training Covers

 Training is tailored to the audience, setting, and goals of each partner. Topics may include: 

 

  • Understanding human trafficking and exploitation
  • Recognizing grooming, coercion, manipulation, and warning signs
  • Understanding online exploitation and recruitment risks
  • Recognizing conditions that can increase vulnerability
  • Responding appropriately when concerns are disclosed or suspected
  • Strengthening referral pathways, response practices, and coordination

How is Professional Development different from LIGHTS?

 LIGHTS is prevention education designed for young people ages 11–18. Professional Development prepares adults and institutions to recognize concerns, respond appropriately, and strengthen the systems around youth. 

Can training be customized?

 Yes. Training can be adapted to the audience, setting, existing knowledge, and goals of the partner organization. 

Can UNITY support response planning or broader capacity-building?

 Yes. Depending on the engagement, UNITY Prevention can support organizations in strengthening response protocols, referral pathways, staff preparation, and coordination with relevant partners.
